New York Exercise Instructor's Great Advice
on How to Beat Fitness Obstacles

Just like anything worth pursuing, losing weight and becoming fit will present you with some pitfalls and obstacles.  As an experienced New York exercise instructor, I have seen all the possible challenges, and helped my many clients overcome them one by one.

If you have the intention to start a New York exercise program, be prepared to face some major obstacles as you work towards your goals.  Your success will ultimately depend on how well you navigate around or work through these difficulties.  Here are the most common pitfalls I have encountered in my personal trainer business, and the best ways you can defeat them.

Boredom – Anyone would get tired of eating the same food and dishes all the time, and the same goes for the kinds of exercise you do.  You can always switch up the vegetables you use in your dishes to get some variation.  If you have egg whites every morning, you can add tomatoes one day, then onions and bell peppers on another.  I would also recommend that you use different spices on your healthy recipes, like using jerk seasoning to add a little Caribbean zing to your chicken and veggie stir fry.  Remember that spices have next to no calories, so go ahead and use them as much as you want to get more flavor into your low-fat dishes.

Your exercise routine should also change up once in a while, or maybe you can alternate different workouts.  Regular changes will keep you interested and motivated, and it will even make your exercise more effective, by using your muscles differently, or using different muscle groups.

Family & Friends – People who are not on the same health program as you won’t understand what you are going through.  Sometimes it even seems like they are being downright inconsiderate by offering up fattening food or inviting you to hang out during your exercise schedule.  They are not purposely trying to sabotage you, they just don’t realize the effect their actions have.  All you need to do is sit them down and explain how important your fitness goals are, and they will be glad to support you in any way they can.
No time -  As a personal trainer the excuse I most often heard is “I don’t have time” to go to the gym to exercise or prepare healthy meals.  They think their schedule is full and they don’t even have 20 mins to cook, so they end up eating junk take out.

If you truly believe you don’t have the time to exercise, try to squeeze it into your daily activities, like walking up and down the stairwell at your office building, or use a treadmill at home while watching your evening TV shows.  If you don’t want to miss out on time spent with a significant other, you can take regular brisk walks together.  Any regular activity will help take you closer to your fitness goals.

Frustration – People lose motivation to stick to an exercise program if they don’t see any results.  In my personal training business some of my clients have told me they discontinued a program in the past because they felt it wasn’t effective enough.  I tell them to have a journal where they record their meals, their exercise accomplishments, and their weights and measurements over time.  This way, they would see that there is in fact progress, even if they don’t “feel” it all the time.
