New York Workout Instructor on How
to Conquer Fitness Challenges

In trying to accomplish any worthwhile goal, you will inevitably come up against some challenges.  Losing weight and getting fit is no different.  In my years of being a New York workout instructor I have helped numerous clients work through any kind of fitness obstacle you can think of.

If you have begun a fitness program, expect to encounter both minor and major hurdles along the way to your goal.  How you deal with these workout pitfalls could spell either your success or failure.  I will now talk about the ones that people face most often, and how you can get through them yourself.

Boredom – Who wouldn’t get tired of eating the same things and doing the same workout day in and day out?  With the diet, I would suggest that people try to interchange ingredients, like the vegetables in their regular dishes.  For example in your egg white omelets you could use onions one day then bell peppers the next.  They could also experiment with different spices to change things up, like using jerk seasoning with their chicken and vegetable stir fry for a touch of the Caribbean.  Since spices have little or no calories, feel free to use them liberally and make your meals more flavorful.

Your New York workout program should consist of a variety of exercises, like doing weight training, cardio classes, and yoga alternately.  This will keep it from being monotonous, and will motivate you to keep going over the long term.  Different workouts also train different muscle groups, so it increases the overall benefits.

Family and Friends – Friends and family members who don’t workout probably won’t understand the difficulties you are experiencing.  In fact it sometimes seems that they are intentionally sabotaging you by offering you favorite lasagna or making plans which take you away from your workouts.  They are not trying to derail you, they are just not aware of how their actions affect your weight loss program.  Just discuss your goals and needs with them, and they will be more than happy to help.

No time – The excuse I have heard most often from clients is that they “just don’t have the time” to workout or prepare diet meals.  They can’t fit in the time to go to a gym or cook themselves, so they remain sedentary and eat take out all the time.

If you really don’t have time in the day to workout, try fitting it in the nooks and crannies of your day, like walking around the building during your lunch hour or taking the stairs to your floor.  You could purchase a treadmill and job while watching your favorite primetime shows, and make a regular date with your significant other to go for a brisk walk 3X a week.  Any exercise will help you move forward in achieving your weight loss goals.

Frustration – People will lose motivation if they don’t see continued results in their weight loss program.  As a personal trainer, new clients have told me they quit their previous workout programs because they felt they weren’t making any significant progress.  I advise them to start and maintain a fitness journal, where they can record not only their meals and workouts, but also the results of their regular weigh-ins.  This would show them that they are in fact making headway, even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes.
